[englisch, 'ɪndɪpɔp], auch Brit-Pop, Ende der Achtzigerjahre von der britischen Musikpresse (New Musical Express, Melody Maker) aufgebrachter Begriff für die zum Teil sehr eigenwilligen Popmusik-Kreationen, die von kleineren, unabhängigen Labels (Indie) im Anschluss an Punkrock und New Wave auf den Markt gebracht oder zumindest doch von ihnen initiiert worden waren. Factory, 4AD und Creation gehörten zu den prominentesten Indie-Labels, die mit Bands wie Happy Mondays, den Cocteau Twins, The Smiths oder House of Love diesen in musikalischer Hinsicht äußerst heterogenen Trend auslösten. Künstlerische Eigenwilligkeit und kommerzielle Herkunft aus der britischen Independent-Szene sind dann auch die einzigen Merkmale, die so unterschiedliche Vertreter des britischen Indie-Pop wie Stone Roses, Cabaret Voltaire, Curve, Primal Scream oder Blur, um nur einige der erfolgreichsten zu nennen, gemeinsam haben.
